A defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese-made vehicles, while personnel have been told to avoid discussing secret information in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to discuss classified information while riding in China-made cars.
He said that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but emphasised that security is a issue in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret classification in any kind of car, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Defence Context
This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause chaos to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The wider security situation highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all areas of government operations, from transport use to communication practices.
